UFSC Volunteer Opportunity: Junior Acheivement Day at Brookview Middle School
Please join your fellow UFSC-Toronto volunteers on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 to take part in the Annual Brookview Middle School - Junior Achievement Day!
The UFSC has been fortunate enough to spend a day at Brookview Middle School delivering lessons in finance over a number of years and we are looking to have our strongest volunteer showing this year. This event runs for a full school day (8:00am to 3:00pm) so make sure to book the day off from work.
As a volunteer you will be able to share your life experiences with the students while delivering a nationally-designated curriculum to help students develop important life skills and gain an understanding of finance. The UFSC is aiming to teach over 10 classrooms this year which means that we will be educating both grade 7 and grade 8 classes. In previous years we have only taught the grade 7s but due to the popularity of this volunteer opportunity we have expanded the program.
This has been a traditionally popular and well-attended event at the school and is highly appreciated by students and staff alike. Comments from previous participants and administration include: "Students’ feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive and encouraging. Students left the day expressing optimism and hope for their futures and were able to visualize a path to success" and "We here at JA appreciate the great work UFSC does, and it is volunteers like yourselves who make these programs work year after year."
The grade 7 classes will be learning the “Dollars with Sense” program and the grade 8 classes will learn the “ Economics for Success” program. Below are pdf documents which explain each program in greater detail.
If you are interested in inspiring the young men and women in our community please e-mail Neil Le Grand: neill@trezcapital.com for more details on how you can participate. If you have specific questions about Junior Achievement please contact Gabriel Helbig: ghelbig@jacentralontario.org.
A training session will be provided before we head out to the school and many of the volunteers for this event have a few years of experience teaching this curriculum. If this will be your first time volunteering you will placed with a experienced and knowledgeable volunteer, so don’t be shy!
Look forward to seeing you on May 24!
